Stereo to Mono FAQ

What is a stereo to mono converter?
Mono and stereo audio differ in channel count: mono has one channel, stereo has two. This stereo to mono converter can combine both sides into one channel or keep just the left or right side. It creates a real mono file, not two identical stereo channels.
How are the left and right channels mixed?
Mix Left + Right combines the two input channels with equal weight. If both channels contain the same sound, it stays at a similar level. If one side is silent, the mixed audio can become quieter than the active side.
Can I fix audio that plays in only one ear?
Yes, if your recording contains the sound you need in only one channel. Choose Left Only or Right Only to keep that channel as mono audio. This avoids mixing an empty side into the recording and lowering its level.
Can I convert mono to stereo with this tool?
No. This tool creates one channel from stereo audio. A mono to stereo converter does the opposite task. Duplicating mono across left and right does not create true stereo separation. This tool does not provide that conversion.
Does converting stereo to mono reduce file size by half?
Not always. Uncompressed audio with the same sample rate and bit depth can use roughly half as much channel data. MP3 file size depends mainly on the output bitrate, so switching to mono does not guarantee a 50% reduction.
Will mono conversion change the sound of my music?
It can. Stereo placement disappears in the mix, and opposite-phase sounds may cancel or become quieter. Switch between Original and Preview to hear the change before exporting. Choose Left Only or Right Only if the mix loses important sounds.
Which audio formats can I upload and download?
You can upload audio formats supported by this browser-based tool and export MP3 or WAV. MP3 offers bitrate choices and smaller files in many cases, while WAV stores uncompressed audio and can require more storage.
Is my audio uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and processed locally in your browser using the site's audio processing engine. You can listen to the source, choose a channel mode, and download the result without sending the audio file to our server.
