How to convert audio to M4A

  1. 1

    Add your recordings

Choose supported audio files or drag them onto the batch workspace. Each source is checked before it can be converted.

  2. 2

    Choose M4A and bitrate

M4A is preselected with 192 kbps AAC audio. Select another bitrate or output format if your workflow needs it.

  3. 3

    Convert and save M4A

Start local processing and review each file's progress. Download saves an M4A directly when you upload one file. With multiple files, Download ZIP collects completed outputs, or you can save each row separately.

Create M4A audio for your workflow

Package AAC-encoded audio inside an M4A file without sending your recordings to a conversion server.

01

Encode AAC inside M4A files

An M4A file is an MP4-family audio container. This converter encodes its audio with AAC, giving you a different file type from standalone AAC streams while keeping lossy encoding limitations.

Choose a bitrate for sharing

For M4A, the converter offers supported AAC bitrates so you can choose a quality and file-size trade-off. The new bitrate cannot recover detail already lost in compressed source recordings.

Prepare audio for compatible players

Use M4A when a target app expects a file in the MP4 audio container rather than a raw AAC stream. Playback support still depends on the destination software and the encoded content.

  • M4A extension for each result
  • Keep the original files unchanged
  • Verify playback in your target app

Download batches without uploads

Files are converted in sequence in the browser. Completed outputs remain available when you select another format for subsequent items, and a ZIP can include every successful result.

  • Track each file separately
  • Download items or a ZIP

M4A converter questions

What is the difference between M4A and AAC?
M4A names an audio file stored in an MP4-family container, while AAC is the compression codec used inside it. This tool writes AAC audio into M4A files; the separate AAC output option uses an ADTS stream without the MP4 container.
Does converting MP3 to M4A improve sound quality?
No. MP3 and AAC are both lossy audio codecs. Re-encoding an MP3 as M4A cannot recreate sound removed by the MP3 encoder and may introduce further losses. Keep a lossless source when available, especially for repeated conversions.
How many files can I convert to M4A at once?
On desktop, the batch accepts up to 10 audio files with a combined input budget of 200 MB. On mobile, it accepts 5 files within 100 MB. Individual exports must also fit output and browser memory budgets.
Which M4A bitrate should I choose?
M4A starts at 192 kbps, with six AAC bitrate options from 64 to 320 kbps. Lower values suit smaller files, while higher values usually increase size. Audible differences depend on the source, and all settings use lossy AAC encoding.
Can every audio file be turned into M4A?
Not always. The input extension alone does not guarantee that the embedded codec is readable. AAC encoding also requires supported sample rates and channel layouts; incompatible, damaged or unusual sources show a file-level error instead of an invalid download.
Why can an M4A file be smaller than a WAV file?
WAV commonly stores uncompressed PCM samples, while the AAC codec in an M4A file discards some information to reduce size. Results vary with recording length, bitrate and channels. Smaller size does not mean the sound has become higher quality.
Can I switch from M4A to another format after converting?
Yes. All six Output Format buttons remain available, so later items can use MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG or AAC. Successfully converted M4A files stay downloadable, and Download ZIP packages all completed outputs with their actual extensions. For a single-file list, use Download to save the audio result directly without a ZIP.
Are my audio files uploaded during M4A conversion?
No. The selected recordings are processed locally using FFmpeg in your browser. The processing engine may download code on first use, but the audio itself is not sent to an online conversion API. Download results before closing or refreshing the page.
