Compression Level

How to compress an MP3 file online

  1. 1

    Choose MP3 files

Select an MP3 song, podcast, or voice recording from your device, or add several files for batch compression. Check the original file sizes and listen before choosing a bitrate.

  2. 2

    Set compression level

Choose Light, Medium, Heavy, or Extreme. Each level sets a fixed bitrate. A lower bitrate can decrease MP3 file size, but it can also reduce sound quality. Medium is selected by default.

  3. 3

    Compress and download

Click Compress MP3 to process your files in your browser. Compare the original and compressed sizes, then preview the result. Download saves a single MP3 directly; Download ZIP collects successful results from a list of multiple files. Each file also has its own download.

Compress MP3 files for easier sharing

Use this MP3 file shrinker to adjust the bitrate, compare actual sizes, and listen before saving your audio.

01

Choose your MP3 compression level

Balance audio quality and file size with four bitrate presets. MP3 audio compression re-encodes the original file at the selected bitrate. Duration, tags, and artwork also affect the final size.

  • Light uses 192 kbps to retain more detail.
  • Medium uses 128 kbps as the default.
  • Heavy uses 96 kbps; Extreme uses 64 kbps.

Reduce MP3 file size for sharing

Shrink MP3 file size for email attachments, podcast uploads, or music sharing. Compare the actual reduction before saving. A source already encoded at a low bitrate may stay the same size or become larger.

  • See the original and compressed file size.
  • Preview the actual encoded MP3.
  • Download even if the new file is not smaller.

Compress music and keep MP3 tags

Use the MP3 music compressor for songs as well as speech. Keep compatible title and artist tags and supported embedded JPEG or PNG artwork. Preview the encoded track to judge the quality tradeoff; re-encoding cannot restore detail already lost.

  • Preserve supported title and artist information.
  • Keep compatible embedded album artwork.
  • Compare sound quality at each selected bitrate.

Batch compress MP3 files

Use the batch MP3 compressor to process several tracks at the same bitrate, one file at a time. Successful results stay available when you change settings, retry a failed file, or cancel an attempt.

  • Apply one level to all selected MP3 files.
  • Retry failed files without losing previous results.
  • Download individual MP3s or a ZIP.

MP3 compressor questions

Is this an MP3-to-MP3 compressor?
Yes. This page accepts MP3 audio files only and saves the result as MP3. Files must pass extension, MIME type, and audio-header checks. For WAV-to-MP3 compression or sources in M4A, FLAC, OGG, or AAC format, use the general Audio Compressor.
What do Light, Medium, Heavy, and Extreme mean?
Light is 192 kbps, Medium is 128 kbps, Heavy is 96 kbps, and Extreme is 64 kbps. Medium is selected initially. Lower bitrates usually use less space but can reduce clarity, especially in music with complex sounds.
Can I compress MP3 without losing quality?
No. The tool re-encodes audio using lossy MP3 compression, and each encoding pass can discard audio detail. Light uses a higher bitrate than the other levels, but it does not make the conversion lossless or improve a poor source recording.
Will an MP3 file size reducer always make files smaller?
No. A file already encoded at a low bitrate can grow if you choose a higher bitrate. Short tracks, embedded artwork, and metadata also affect the result. This tool compares actual sizes rather than promising a fixed percentage reduction. You can still download a valid result if it is larger.
Will my MP3 tags and album cover stay intact?
Compatible text metadata and embedded JPEG or PNG album artwork can be copied into the new MP3. Unsupported fields or covers may be omitted. Keeping tags and artwork can make a compressed file larger than the audio bitrate alone suggests.
What happens when I change the compression level?
Changing a level creates a new attempt from the original uploaded MP3, not from an earlier compressed result. Your last successful download stays available until a replacement succeeds, including when an attempt is cancelled or fails.
How many MP3 files can I compress at once?
You can select up to 10 MP3 files on desktop and 5 on mobile. The combined input limits are 200 MB and 100 MB, respectively. Output size, saved results, ZIP limits, and device memory also apply.
Do I need to install audio compression software?
No. You can compress MP3 files online for free without installing a desktop app or creating an account. Audio processing runs locally in your browser; your MP3 files are not uploaded to a processing server. The FFmpeg engine downloads its code when needed. Keep the page open while it works and save your results before leaving.
