How to compress an M4A audio file online

  1. 1

    Add your M4A files

Select an M4A voice recording, song, or podcast from your device. Add several files if you want to compress a batch. Check their original sizes and listen before choosing a bitrate.

  2. 2

    Pick an AAC compression level

Choose Light, Medium, Heavy, or Extreme to set the AAC target bitrate. A lower bitrate can reduce M4A file size, but it can also reduce sound quality. Medium is selected by default.

  3. 3

    Compress and download

Click Compress M4A to process your audio in your browser. Compare the original and compressed sizes, then listen to the result. Download saves a single M4A directly; Download ZIP collects successful results from a list of multiple files. Each file also has its own download.

Reduce M4A file size in your browser

This M4A audio compressor helps you balance size and sound quality while keeping your original files unchanged.

01

Choose your AAC bitrate

Select one of four bitrate levels to compress M4A audio. Medium is the default. Each result contains a new AAC audio track in an M4A file; the final size depends on duration and encoder behavior.

  • Light targets 192 kbps for more detail.
  • Medium targets 128 kbps by default.
  • Heavy targets 96 kbps; Extreme targets 64 kbps.

Reduce recording size for sharing

Use the M4A file compressor to prepare voice notes, podcasts, or music for email attachments and sharing. Compare the actual reduction before saving. Audio already encoded at a low bitrate may not shrink.

  • Review the exact before-and-after sizes.
  • Play the original or compressed result.
  • Save the valid output even when size increases.

Keep your source audio untouched

Each attempt compresses the original M4A audio, so you can compare bitrate levels without repeatedly encoding a previous result. AAC compression is lossy, and the new file does not preserve original tags, chapters, or embedded artwork.

  • Retain the original M4A on your device.
  • Expect a new AAC audio track, not lossless compression.
  • Original tags and cover art are not copied.

Batch compress M4A files

Apply one AAC bitrate level to several M4A recordings and process them one file at a time. Save successful results separately or together in a ZIP. Earlier results stay available while you change settings or retry a failed attempt.

  • Apply one AAC target bitrate to the batch.
  • Retry without recompressing previous results.
  • Download individual M4A files or a ZIP.

M4A compression questions

Which M4A files can I compress?
This tool accepts .m4a files containing supported AAC or ALAC audio. It saves a new M4A file with an AAC audio track. Other file extensions are rejected. Some unusual sample-rate, channel, or bitrate combinations may also be rejected by the encoder.
What do the four compression levels change?
Light targets 192 kbps, Medium 128 kbps, Heavy 96 kbps, and Extreme 64 kbps. Medium is the default. These are AAC encoding targets rather than guaranteed output sizes, and lower bitrates can affect sound clarity.
Is M4A compression lossless?
No. This tool re-encodes audio using lossy AAC. An original ALAC recording is converted to lossy AAC, and re-encoding existing AAC audio can remove more detail. Keep the original file if preserving exact audio quality matters.
Can I reduce M4A audio file size by a fixed percentage?
This tool uses bitrate presets, not a target size or percentage. The actual reduction depends on the source. An M4A already encoded at a low bitrate may grow if you choose a higher bitrate, and the file container adds some overhead. Compare the displayed sizes; valid results remain downloadable even when they are larger.
Will M4A metadata and album artwork be preserved?
No. This version exports the audio track without copying original title, artist, chapter data, or embedded cover art. Keep the original M4A if those details matter. This behavior differs from the MP3 Compressor's supported tag handling.
Can I change the level without losing an earlier result?
Yes. Each new compression attempt starts from the original uploaded M4A, not from the previous result. Successfully compressed files remain downloadable if you change the level, cancel processing, or encounter an error before a replacement succeeds.
How many M4A files can I process?
Select up to 10 files on desktop or 5 on mobile. Combined input limits are 200 MB and 100 MB, respectively. Export, retained results, ZIP budgets, and your device's memory can further limit processing.
Can I use the M4A compressor online without installing an app?
Yes. You can compress M4A files for free in your browser, with no desktop app or account required. Processing runs locally on your device; your audio files are not uploaded to a processing server. The FFmpeg engine downloads its code when needed. Keep the tab open while it works and save your results before leaving.
